The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.
Marcel Proust

Time and space bear no relevance, in the midst of such majestic imposing grace. These endless monuments of nature bear the epithets of the beginning of life as we know it. From her, we have come, in her abundant giving our lives flourish and in her wrath shall we perish.

The Himalayas - one cannot but be moved by a million emotions as one stands facing her amazing beauty. To me, this journey to the region of Leh Ladakh, meant so much, right from the inception of the idea. I had no second thoughts, when my friends Raji & Bindu, mentioned a couple of months back, about the Exploratory Trip that a tour group WE (Women Explorers) Vice Regal were planning, to the mountain region known as the Roof of the World. We had all been waiting with bated breath for September 2nd to arrive. And yet little did we realize how much it would alter our lives, in more ways than one. It was tough leaving our families behind. Most of us were doing this for the first time. We had heard all kinds of stories, related to Altitude sickness/acclimatization issues that many encounter, while travelling to Leh. But that did not deter our spirits one bit. In life, there comes a time when we have a call. Some of us heed it, and sometimes, perhaps due to lack of time/ support /opportunity/ inspiration, we do not take it up. But sometimes, when the voices are loud and clear, it is then that we move with a single minded devotion, no matter what. This was our one such calling.

Deepa Varma, our Tour Co-ordinator and Strategist, had extensively researched the region, and left no stone unturned as far as the medical aspects of the trip was concerned. We were all on medication, just so that no one was left affected by Altitude sickness etc. Trust me, getting together a group of 18 women with different temperaments and mindsets is not an easy task and yet, the moment we all met, we hit it off instantly. The trip was so well organized, that there was no room for confusion or loss of time. Every second spent at Leh was worth a thousand lifetimes.

No words can do justice to the kind of feelings that the Himalayas can invoke in you. These virgin lands untouched by the outside world, is a sight to behold. The pristine waters, clear blue skies and snow capped mountains - The Sheer energy is enough to dry a thousand tears into oblivion. Navigating through Central Ladakh to the regions of Nubra Valley, Kardungla Range, the Chang La Pass and finally to the Pangong Lake & the Indus River, was indeed a journey in itself. 18 of us from different walks of life merged into a single entity, bonded by a sense of team spirit and adventure. The culture and tradition of the Ladakhis is something that has inspired us to view life and our relationship to the Universe in a different perspective. They live in unconditional love and respect towards every person they meet. The interconnectedness of the Universe is deeply embedded in the Ladakhi ideology and the influence of the Tibetan Buddhism has only accentuated that. Soft spoken and polite, a smile is there to greet you no matter which part of Ladakh you travel. Juley and “Thuk che che” are two words that will always bring a smile to my face.

Leh has had left a lasting impression on my mind. The immaculate serenity & Beauty of the place, its people, and the friends I have gathered along my journey made this trip one of the most memorable ones ever. From exploring the Nubra and Kardungla to River Rafting in The Indus, The laughter and adventure that we have shared as co-travelers and friends, will always remain with me. One thing is for sure, if there is another Adventure Tour that I will be doing, it will be with WE. Thank you Deepa for everything!

It was hard leaving the region. I spent the last few minutes of my time, collecting the Himalayan soil to bring home. And as I sat in the Lobby Garden listening to the Ladakhi meditation music and absorbing the breathless view around me, I knew in my heart, that someday, I will come back to this amazing land, whose memories will sustain me, until then, all the days of my life.
